Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 is out, but if you want a phablet with an S Pen, the older Galaxy Note 4 is still an option. Indeed, it's hard not to love Samsung's amazing Note 4. This is, after all, a device that no-one thought would ever work but now four generations in the phone is selling brilliantly and it has invented a new category of mobile phones. We do hope the Galaxy Note 5 is coming to the UK but the specs on this phone are just as good and it proves quite a bit cheaper than Samsung's new Galaxy S6 Edge+ phablet.

The Note 4 adds bundles of amazing features that makes this handset a legitimate flagship. There's a removable battery and a microSD card, both of which have now vanished from the Galaxy S range.
Even more important though is the stunning camera on the Note 4. If you're using your phone for photography then you won't be disappointed by what you get out of the Note. The S-Pen enables you to write notes and translate them from handwriting to text and while it's a niche feature, it can be very handy.
Galaxy Note 4: Fact file
It's the original. But is it still the best? The Galaxy Note series pretty much invented the phablet segment. And while the Galaxy Note 4 is now over a year old, it still packs a punch.
That starts with genre-defining 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, replete as it is with no fewer than 2,560 by 1,440 pixels. It's truly a marvel of modern science and engineering. That said, the Note 4's plastic chassis isn't exactly the last word in material quality. But then things have moved on a lot in the last year or so. Alloy gorgeousness has become the norm.
Still, the Exynos 5433 CPU certain ticks a lot of boxes thanks to its big-LITTLE design that combines four high performance cores for grunt with a quartet of downsized alternatives for battery saving. It's a CPU design that's supposed to offer the best of bother worlds.
As for the OS, it now comes with Android Lollipop, which is at least an upgrade over the KitKat build it originally shipped with. But it's still behind the curve of the very latest Marshmallow 6.0 Android builds. For storage, 32GB is your lot, but there's a MicroSD slot for easy upgrades along with 3GB of RAM.
For taking snaps and video, a 16MP camera does duty and includes 4K capture capability. The battery, meanwhile, is hugola at 3220mAh. And don't forget that novel S-Pen input stylus.
Our verdict
Samsung has packed in more power, an even better display and a great camera making the Galaxy Note 4 an excellent smartphone. It may no longer be the best phablet around, but if your budget won't stretch to the new Note 5 then this won't let you down.
If you're already rocking the Galaxy Note 3, on the other hand, there's not a huge point in upgrading, unless you really want the screen and chassis bump. But if you're rocking an older phablet or considering picking one up the Galaxy Note 4 should on your list.
It'll be too big for some, while the true usefulness of the S Pen is still questionable. But overlook these things and you'll be more than happy with the now-cheaper Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
