Sony Xperia Z5: Fact file

So, how does Sony's latest superphone stack up on paper? In the modern idiom, it's a biggie but not quite a phablet. That means a 5.2-inch IPS screen with a full-HD 1,920 by 1,080 pixel grid.

For compute power, Sony has gone for the monstrous Snapdragon 810 chip, all eight cores of it. Four of those cores are Cortex-A57 monsters running at 2GHz. You also get a further four Cortex-A53 cores running at a more modest 1.5GHz. The best of both worlds then.

As for software, the Xperia Z5 doesn't quite have the very latest build of the Android OS, known as Marshamallow 6.0. Instead, it makes do with the 5.1.1 update of the previous Lollipop build. However, a Marshmallow update is imminent.

Elsewhere, there's 32GB of storage and a mega 23MP camera, the latter good for 4K video capture at 30 frames per second. All in, the Xperia Z5 rocks the scales at 154g, which is impressive for a large phone with a hefty 2900mAh battery.

Our verdict

Make no mistake, Sony's Xperia Z5 is a huge step up from the old Xperia Z3+. The X3+'s overheating problems were unforgivable and enough has changed on the Xperia Z5 to put clear space between it and the missteps of the past.

The Xperia Z5 is also one of the best Android phones you can buy. After the lukewarm reaction to the likes of the HTC One M9, Xperia Z3+ and LG G4, Sony has gone all out to beat the Galaxy S6. That starts with great design. It's a great improvement on the clear glass back and sharp edges of the Xperia Z2. The Z5 is lighter, it's thinner, and the frosted glass back is nothing short of gorgeous.

The new fingerprint sensor is overdue but this is one of the best implementations yet. It feels natural to have it within the button on the side of the phone and it works like a dream. Looking back at how awful the fingerprint sensor was on the Galaxy S5 with a poor sliding action needed, it's good Sony's nailed this first time.

The camera is more curious. Some images can seem lifeless. But the technical ability including zoom modes and raw image settings will impress the pixel perfectionists. Meanwhile, the battery may not be incredible but it's a step in the right direction.

If you're going to buy a Sony phone, this is surely the one. After the abomination that was the Xperia Z3+, the Z5 isn't quite perfect. But it does deliver where it matters.
