MWC 2016: Samsung spins the Galaxy S7 performance roulette

MWC 2016: Samsung spins the Galaxy S7 performance roulette

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have launched, and while Samsung stayed quiet on the processor details during its press conference we now know they'll both turn up in two different variants.

During our hands on time with the Galaxy S7, we loaded up Geekbench 3 and Antutu to reveal the device we had packed an octa-core processor. This told us that it was using Samsung's own Exynos chip, rather than Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 820.

The 820 chip and Galaxy S7 duo were closely linked in a number of rumors ahead of Samsung's MWC 2016 press conference, and now Qualcomm has confirmed that its latest top tier processor will also be featured in Samsung's new flagship handsets.

Location, location, location

When it comes to buying the Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, though, you won't be able to select which chipset you want in your phone. You'll instead be constrained by your location and the variant Samsung deems fit for your market.

Previous launches dictate that the Exynos variant generally stays in Asian markets, with the Snapdragon chipset making its way to markets such as the US and UK. That should also apply to the rest of Europe and North America. We're still waiting for final confirmation on exactly which countries will get what.

What it means is there's likely to be some performance differences between the two variants, and for those who have the device which isn't quite as quick, it will be a little bit insulting knowing that other countries have a better version of your expensive new phone.
