US Justice Department seeks to force Apple to comply with the FBI

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a motion seeking to force Apple to meet the FBI's demands that it create a backdoor into an iPhone.

CNBC has confirmed that the DOJ filed the motion, which comes after Apple was reportedly given until February 26 to respond to a court order that it help the FBI crack an iPhone 5C used by one of the shooters in the 2015 San Bernardino, Calif. terrorist attack.

Apple CEO Tim Cook staunchly refused to meet the FBI's demands, saying a backdoor would create an unprecedented risk to Apple customers. He called the agency's demands "chilling".

The DOJ's motion would force Apple to help the FBI access data inside the iPhone, which is encrypted behind a passcode.

The Cupertino-based iPhone maker, and many of its fellow technology firms (like Google), intimate that a decision like this could put the privacy and security of all smartphone users at risk.

We've asked Apple for comment on the DOJ's motion, and will update this story if and when we hear back.
