Today, millions — more likely billions — of digitized documents are sitting on servers with little chance of anyone being able to search their contents without physically reading them. To do so would take more life-times than any of us will be granted. Why? Because they were handwritten. Type-written documents can be OCR’d, but handwriting remains a fiendishly difficult problem.
