I am always looking for ways to be more efficient when working in
Excel especially when it comes to formulas and functions. Sometimes in
an Excel work sheet you may have to apply a formula to hundreds or even
thousands of Columns or Rows in your Excel work sheet. So, let's look at
the 3 fastest ways I have found to apply your Excel formula to an
entire Column or Row.
2. Using The Excel Shortcut Keys. This is one of my favourite ways to quickly apply a formula to an entire column or row in Excel especially if you have hundreds or thousands, or even tens of thousands of rows to apply your formula to.
- Dragging the fill handle. In my experience this is the most common way I have seen Excel users fast fill their Excel formulas.
- First type the formula in your first cell. As an example let's use =(B4*$E$1)+B4 typed into cell C4
- Click the cell you have just typed the formula into-in this case cell C4
- The black fill handle will appear in the bottom right corner of the cell that contains your formula
- To fill the entire column- drag the formula down the column, to where you want your formula to fill. To fill the entire row then drag the formula to the far right across your rows you want to fill with your formula.
2. Using The Excel Shortcut Keys. This is one of my favourite ways to quickly apply a formula to an entire column or row in Excel especially if you have hundreds or thousands, or even tens of thousands of rows to apply your formula to.
- First, select the whole Column (or Row) in this case it is Column C
- Type your formula in C4. In my example it is =(B4*$E$1)+B4
- Hit CTRL and Enter together on the keyboard
- Boom. Job done. Your formula is applied to the whole Column or Row
- Enter your formula in your first cell of your Column or Row. In this example let's keep to typing the formula in cell C4
- Select your full set of cells to apply the formula to
- Go to Home Tab- Editing - Fill - Fill Down (or select fill across for row fill)
