The United States is working closely to identify Americans who were
among those wounded by attacks in Paris, the State Department said
Saturday.
It did not specify how many people were hurt, nor did it make mention of Americans having been killed in the shooting and bombing rampage that started Friday night and left at least 128 people dead and many wounded.
“The US government is working closely with French authorities to identify American victims,” Deputy State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement.
“We are aware there are Americans among the injured, and are offering them the full range of consular assistance,” he added.
Separately, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter spoke by telephone Saturday morning to express his condolences to his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian.
“The US and France maintain a close relationship in countering terrorism around the world including direct action in North Africa, Syria and Iraq,” the Pentagon said.
“Secretary Carter reiterated the United States commitment to stand by our oldest ally in taking additional steps to respond to these barbaric attacks,” it added.
