Corps NSCDC were yesterday deployed in Southern Ijaw council area of
Bayelsa to ensure the safety of lives and property in today’s
rescheduled governorship election in the state.
Oporoma, the headquarters of Southern Ijaw council area was Saturday turned into a battle ground by gun totting youths loyal to the rival the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and the All Progressive Congress APC.
Residents according to sources were forced to scamper for safety in the comfort of their homes, a development that prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to postpone the exercise in the council to Sunday.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Argugun, at media briefing in Yenagoa urged registered voters and residents of the affected areas not to entertain any fear as the security agencies are on top of the situation.
He described as untrue the claim that some persons lost their in the orgy of violence that trailed the botched poll at Oporoma.
The DIG said, “The report that some people were killed cannot be confirmed as corpses of the purported dead persons cannot be traced and their particulars could not be obtained from any source.
“Information at my disposal is that there was no death in Southern Ijaw local government Area.
“Security agencies are ready and nobody should take us for granted. The country is greater than any individual and nobody is above the law.”
On why election could not take place in Southern Ijaw on Saturday, he blamed the development on logistic.
He also confirmed the arrest of ten persons by security operatives and recovery of 5 AK47 rifles and one pistol from some hoodlums.
