iPhone 7 Plus might double up on rear cameras

With the launch of the iPhone 7 still months away, an analyst expects the new Apple handset to sport a dual-camera system.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will include the two cameras on the back of the bigger iPhone 7 Plus to produce higher quality images and could also allow for optical zoom, according to a report from 9to5Mac.

It's unclear how the system will work, but the report claims one camera could potentially support optical image stabilization and a wide field of view, and the other will sport a telephoto lens that has a narrower field of view, with the ability to combine the two images together to create a clearer image.

Coming the two images could also allow Apple to use smaller sensors, meaning the handset could maintain a thinner profile without a camera bump.

Two better than one?

While this isn't the first time we've heard rumors of Apple playing with dual-cameras for the iPhone, there is no guarantee Apple will release an iPhone with two rear cameras this year.

After all, rumors of a dual-camera-toting iPhone began early last year, before the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus were launched.

In fact, Kuo indicates that Apple could be developing two models of the larger handset, one with the dual-camera system and one without, meaning we might not see a dual camera at all, or we Apple is thinking about releasing two separate Plus models.

Still, with more than half a year left until Apple's big annual iPhone event, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt.
